Objectives:Propecia is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in men. It is not recommended for women because of the risk of sexual dysfunction in some women. There are currently no data on the effect of propecia on women. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of using propecia on the sexual function of women.
Methods:A total of 39 women with female pattern hair loss were randomly assigned to take 1 mg of propecia daily for a period of 6 months. During this time, sexual function was assessed using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF).
Results:The average score of the FSFI was 2.58 +/- 1.5 in women taking propecia. The average score of the IIEF was 5.38 +/- 2.3 in women taking propecia. These values were statistically significant for a total of 3 and a subset of participants who had a score of 1. The IIEF was significantly better than the FSFI and the FSFI + IIEF in women taking propecia. The FSFI was significantly better than the FSFI in the subgroup of women with a score of 1, and the IIEF was significantly better than the IIEF in the subgroup of women with a score of 2.
Conclusion:Our study suggests that taking propecia is safe and effective for the treatment of female pattern hair loss in women.
